My Project Inspiration
I want to dedicate a short section of this project to my Aunt Deedee, who inspired me to chose Down syndrome as the topic of my final project. Aunt Deedee is my dad's younger sister (pictured on the left of the photo), who was born with Down syndrome. I think that sometimes some people act with pity towards individuals who have disabilities. However, my Aunt Deedee is certainly not someone who should be pitied. True, she does clearly have some limited mental and physical capabilities, and at times she is difficult to handle because she can act like a young child. But in my opinion, this is no reason for her to be looked down upon or pitied. Deedee is one of the happiest people I know, and she is always very enthusiastic about life. While she may not be the most physically fit or intelligent person, she loves to participate in outdoor activities with our family and learn new ideas and knowledge by being creative. It can be easy to get so caught up in today's busy lifestyle, but Deedee always indirectly reminds me to appreciate the little things in life. Because of Deedee, I wanted to research and discuss Down syndrome to hopefully allow readers to realize that individuals with Down syndrome do not deserve pity, but simply need to be treated differently.
